The Appalachian State Mountaineers defeated Troy with a 53-yard Hail Mary

With a 53-yard Hail Mary as the winning play, the Appalachian State Mountaineers defeated Troy.

On the final play of the game, Christan Horn caught Chase Brice’s last-second heave for a 53-yard touchdown, giving Appalachian State a 32-28 victory over Troy in the inaugural Sun Belt Conference game.

With 1:13 remaining in the game, Brice led Appalachian State (2-1) down the field before throwing an incomplete pass on fourth-and-goal from the 2-yard line.

With 15 seconds left after the kickoff, Appalachian State tackled Gunnar Watson on first down for a safety to pull within 28-26. The Mountaineers then took over at their own 47-yard line. On fourth-and-10, Brice threw the winning touchdown.

Dashaun Davis, a wide receiver, gave the Mountaineers a 7-0 lead with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Christian Wells.

The second quarter saw Watson score twice on 1-yard runs, giving Troy (1-2) a 21-14 lead at the break.

22 of the 34 passes that Brice completed went for 278 yards and two touchdowns. Horn caught 5 passes for 98 yards.

For the Trojans, Watson completed 23 of his 37 passes for 302 yards and one interception. Troy only managed 57 yards on 28 attempts.
