History of Super Bowl Betting

The NFL has been in existence for more than a century, having been founded in 1920. However, the first Super Bowl was not played until 1960, forty years later!

After years of negotiation, the NFL and AFL (American Football League) agreed to merge in 1970, and the first Super Bowl was played in 1967, amidst rising interest in the Super Bowl odds. The Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs by a score of 35-10 in front of 61,000 spectators at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. It is incredible to consider that this was the only Super Bowl in history that was not played in front of a full house. Can you imagine a single empty seat at a modern sporting event?

Which Team Has Won The Most Super Bowls?

The odds to win the Super Bowl are frequently based on which teams have been the most successful in recent years, but which team has won the most championships?

There was a clear winner in terms of which team had won the most Super Bowls until very recently. However, an epic revival has levelled the playing field, so let’s see who comes out on top.

Both the New York Giants and the Green Bay Packers have won four Super Bowl championships, with the Packers winning the inaugural game in 1967. Each team has also lost a Super Bowl championship game, the Giants in 2000 and the Packers three years prior.

The Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers both have five Super Bowl victories. The Cowboys participated in four Super Bowls in the 1970s and won two and lost two. San Francisco’s 49ers dominated the 1980s, winning an unprecedented four Super Bowls in eight years between 1981 and 1989. San Francisco did win another Super Bowl in 1994, but the Cowboys dominated the final decade of the 20th century with three Super Bowl appearances that resulted in victories in 1992, 1993, and 1995.

The New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers are in front with six Super Bowl victories each. In contrast to the Cowboys’ consistent success in the 1970s, the Steelers dominated the decade with four championships in 1974, 1971, 1978, and 1979.

Pittsburgh have won an additional two championships since the turn of the century, in 2005 and 2008, but the 21st century has belonged to one team.

Amazingly, the New England Patriots had never won a Super Bowl prior to 2001, having lost the 1985 and 1996 championships. However, this first victory was quickly followed by victories in 2003 and 2004, followed by a ten-year drought despite two additional final appearances. Additional victories in 2014, 2016, and 2018 – led by the legendary Tom Brady – make the Patriots the most successful team in NFL history, with 11 appearances in the championship game.

Best Super Bowl Players Of All Time

There is a difference between being an NFL great, and being a Super Bowl great. The NFL is full of fantastic athletes and impressive performances, but the true GOATs turn it on when it matters most, on the biggest stage.

The likes of, Jerry Rice, John Elway, Terry Bradshaw and Emmitt Smith are all such players to have turned it on during Super Bowl season, but there are three names that stand out.

Joe Montana

‘Joe Cool’ was the man for the big occasion, bringing out his best when in front of the watching world. In fact, he never lost a Super Bowl (four wins), and even managed three Super Bowl MVPs. Talk about saving your best for the big stage.

Troy Aikman

Earlier we discussed how the 1990s belonged to the Cowboys, and they have the unflinching accuracy of Tory Aikman to thank for that period of success. Another quarterback to win all of his appearances, Aikman completed a Bowl record 70% of his passes in his first Super Bowl appearance, setting up a platform for his team for years to come.

Tom Brady

You guessed correctly. Tom Brady is the third quarterback in history to win a championship with one team. He is responsible for the Patriots’ resurgence in the 2000s. Since then, he has won two more Super Bowls with the Patriots and led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to an incredible 31-9 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021.

Seven Super Bowl victories, three Super Bowl MVP awards, and the record for Super Bowl passing yards and touchdown passes are all held by Tom Brady, the only GOAT.

More markets become available on Bodog’s Super Bowl odds board as the game approaches. During the regular season, the odds for each team are likely to fluctuate based on their standing, current form, and upcoming matches.

However, once the two finalists are determined, Super Bowl wagers begin to take shape. In addition to the standard markets such as the moneyline, spread, and over/under, you can also wager on total touchdowns, whether a safety will be scored, whether both teams will score a certain number of points, and whether either (or both) teams will score in each quarter.

Do you believe you can accurately predict the final score of the Super Bowl? We also have odds for that.

Fill in the Super Bowl Bet Slip

The contract for the bet is on the bet slip; this virtual paper will ensure that the odds you saw when placing your bet are the odds that you’re paid by if your bet wins. When you pick a team on the Super Bowl odds board, it auto-populates on the slip, recording the current Super Bowl odds. Then simply key in how much you want to risk, and the payout will appear in the “Win” field. You can add as many bets as you want to the slip.

With your bets locked in, you can kick back and watch your chosen team(s) perform through the season, knowing that if they go all the way and hoist the Vince Lombardi trophy in February, you’ve got an extra reason to smile.

Super Bowl Betting FAQs

Should I Bet Over Or Under On Super Bowl Points Betting?

That very much depends on the game and the two teams involved. If you have two defensive teams who aren’t known for scoring many points, you might want to back the under. Beware though, as the line will have been set lower to accommodate this fact.

How Do +200 Odds Work?

Any bet with a + sign before means you’re betting on an underdog. If you place $100 on a +200 bet, you’ll win $200 profit plus your $100 stake back.

How Do -200 Odds Work?

On the flip side, betting with a – sign means you’re backing the favourite. It works a little bit differently in that the amount following the minus sign represents the amount of money you would need to stake to win $100.

What Is The Biggest Ever Super Bowl Bet?

At the time of writing, the biggest ever Super Bowl bet was placed in 2002, when a $7.9million wager was placed on the St Louis Rams vs New England Patriots showdown.

What Is The Biggest Super Bowl Betting Upset?

The New England Patriots were a shoe-in to win Super Bowl XLII in 2008 against an unfancied New York Giants team – and the odds showed it. Eli Manning had other ideas though, and the Giants pulled off a memorable 17-14 victory.

What Is The Biggest Ever Super Bowl Victory?

As it stands, the San Francisco 49ers hold the record for the biggest ever Super Bowl win. During Super Bowl XXIV, they thumped the Denver Broncos 55-10 – a margin of 45 points.
