La Liga threatens to strike against the return of the Super League!

While it had quickly disappeared last year, the Super League project – still supported by Juventus, Real Madrid, Atlético de Madrid or even Barça – is still a threat to UEFA and the League of Champions. This stillborn concept of closed sports competition between some of the most powerful football clubs on the European continent had fueled much debate and many national championships still fear its return.

In Spain, where the three biggest clubs in the country are in favor of this project to counter the new reform of the Champions League, scheduled for 2024, tension is mounting. The sports bill, opposed by 39 of La Liga’s 42 clubs, is taking shape in Spain. Congress ignored the request of opponents of the reform and the text could be approved as early as Tuesday. The consequence ? A possibility for clubs, who wish, to participate in the Super League, without any risk of being excluded from the Spanish Championship.

La Liga wants to go on strike

Faced with this dreaded decision, 39 Spanish clubs, from the first and second division, are threatening to strike this weekend, during the 12th day of La Liga and the 13th day of Liga Santander, against this decision, only supported by the Colchoneros, the Merengues and the Blaugranas. “I don’t know what the mechanism will be, but if through dialogue and negotiation we don’t find a solution to the government’s current position, there will be mechanisms of strength and unity from the clubs. We cannot allow our model to be destroyed in this way, which we consider to be totally unfair.assured the vice-president of La Liga, Quico Catalán, on SuperDeporte.

“If I am afraid of reprisals? Never. We are asking for something that is fair and consistent, that is necessary. Why do we have to be in favor of a project for a future Super League? Why don’t professional leagues have the same rights as federations? (…) I didn’t hear anyone. I have yet to hear anyone who has a solid argument that the 39 clubs opposing it are wrong.”, he added. If this bill is applied, and even in the event of a strike, it would be a first victory for the Super League project, far from being buried.
