Mean defense could be the order of the day

21.25 UK-time, AT&T Stadium, Arlington. It’s New York Jets @ Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, Sept 17th. America’s Team entertain the Jets a week after doing a number on the other Big Apple outfit, the Giants.

Ahead of hostilities, the money line (outright) betting is Cowboys 2/9, Jets 17/5.

Team news

Saddest news of the last week or so in the NFL – the serious Achilles injury suffered by Aaron Rodgers in week 1. Jets’ new QB will likely miss the whole season and it’s such a pity. He was enticed away from Green Bay to give the Jets a shot at postseason and maybe more.

Think of what Brady did for Tampa. Rodgers could have achieved similar. A great player – let’s hope he recovers well and all his UK admirers I’m sure wish him nothing but the best.

As for Dallas, they are having something of a ‘guard’ crisis – both Zack Martin and Tyler Smith have been in the wars and are under a cloud, availability-wise. Receiver Brandin Cooks is also a doubt.

1st half total points under 19.5 @ 20/21

Looking at the nuts and bolts of this one, especially in the absence of Rodgers, it’s tempting to conclude that defenses will have the upper hand, certainly early on. That’s my take – coach Robert Saleh has transformed NY since he arrived in early 2021, and they are far more difficult to beat these days.

Zach Wilson will continue at QB, after taking over from Rodgers early in the piece last week, and let’s not forget they defeated the Bills, restricting Josh Allen and company to just 16 points. Dallas put 40 past the Giants, but will surely find the Jets rearguard a different kettle of fish.

NY registered 5 sacks against Allen, and cornerback DJ Reed led the tackle count. They were awesome. Having shut out the Giants, the Dallas ‘D’ is also in prime order, so my hunch is that we’ll get to half-time without too many points on the board.

Anytime Touchdown scorer CeeDee Lamb @ 6/4

Things could open up a little as the game develops, and home field being the advantage it is in sports, if TDs are going to be scored let’s take a pretty prolific ‘local’ receiver to grab at least one in the course of our UK-evening.

CeeDee Lamb had 4 receptions for an average of 19 yards last week, and while Tony Pollard did much of the heavy lifting on the deck, Lamb is a deadly aerial threat when deployed.

Fingers crossed that Prescott can find him in space and allow the former Sooners College star wide receiver to show his undoubted talent.
