OM leaves Lorient with a tasteless draw

At the end of the 30th day of Ligue 1, Olympique de Marseille traveled to Brittany to face FC Lorient on the lawn of the Moustoir stadium. With the victories of PSG against Nice and Lens against Strasbourg, the Phocaeans had to win against the Merlus in order to cling to the championship podium. OM can harbor regrets, especially in attacking realism and efficiency, where Igor Tudor’s players failed in the last gesture.

In the first half, OM got into the game quite well, putting their foot on the ball very quickly, constantly looking for a breach. After a good shift from Alexis Sanchez, Cengiz Ünder controlled perfectly to follow up with a powerful strike with the right foot, but Vito Mannone made a reflex save to repel the danger (12th). The Turk was once again at the origin of Marseille’s second biggest chance by intercepting goalkeeper Mannone’s pass for Darlin Yongwa, but his curling shot from the left was not on target (36th). At the break, the score was still blank despite a clear domination of OM, in the stats as in the game, against a solid Lorient defense.

Lorient suffers, but does not weaken

In the second act, Marseille wasted no time in putting on a boost with a powerful strike from Leonardo Balerdi after a good fixation from Ünder on the side (54th). Lorient’s first real opportunity came from the feet of Bamba Dieng, a former OM player, who tried to volley a previous shot blocked by his teammate Darlin Yongwa (63rd). Despite late substitutions from both sides, the match ended goalless. The Hakes nevertheless woke up in the last moments with in particular a long shot from Romain Faivre (88th) or this face-to-face attempt from Ibrahima Koné (89th). Finally, the match ended in a scoreless (0-0).

In the standings, OM are still in a good position, with 3rd place on the podium, behind Paris Saint-Germain and RC Lens. But everything is still possible at the end of the season. As for the Hakes, the engine seems less and less efficient, now camped in the soft underbelly of the French championship with a 10th place. Next weekend, FC Lorient will travel to the Grand Rocher to face AS Monaco, while OM will host ESTAC at the Vélodrome, during a crucial 31st day for the Phocaeans.
